Cogitations and Musings
Why does the Constitution Party exist?
by John Beal
- Agreeing with the Governor of the universe that, "Man shall not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God," we exist to apply the whole Word of God to every area of our private and public life. Public policy is no exception and must exhibit God's commandment to love our neighbor.
- Agreeing with Jesus that, "you are either with me or against me," destroys the myth that neutral ground exists somewhere. This in turn necessitates our commitment to transforming the world, not conforming to it. Thus we must work not for what we think is possible, but what we know to be necessary.
- As Christians, we understand that we are "the seed of the woman" and at war with "the seed of the serpent." This manifests as a culture war and demands faithful and courageous adherence to the strategy of victory given by our Commander in Chief, Jesus Christ.
- We stand in unity with the Church as witnesses to God's sovereignty over the nations, not man's, and His command to His disciples to "disciple the nations."
- By our lives we intend to define authentic patriotism, one nation under God and refute and rebuke the humanistic alternatives, one nation over God, one nation without God or one nation as God.
- We understand God's divine governmental order (the only order leading to enduring peace) as self, family, Church and finally state. Biblical government is inside - out, bottom - up, servant not master, stewardship not dictatorship, liberating not suffocating, life- affirming and preserving not death-perpetuating.
- We stand for and define Biblical hierarchy: God is in charge and all men are ultimately accountable to Him. Our founding fathers believed this and our representatives must also.
- We are contending for Biblical righteousness in all and Biblical justice for all. Thus God's law must become the standard for every heart before it can become the permanent standard for the culture.
- We pray and work as Jesus taught and modeled: God's kingdom and will on earth as it is in heaven. Regeneration precedes societal transformation.
- As light, salt and leaven, we seek to penetrate darkness, corruption, hypocrisy, lawlessness, apostasy, indifference, apathy, cowardice and all things evil.
- We agree with Lord Acton that "power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Thus we affirm the Constitution's separation of powers. Eric Hoffer got it right when he said, "Absolute power corrupts even when exercised for humane purposes. The benevolent despot who sees himself as a shepherd of the people still demands from others the submissiveness of sheep."
- We believe that man is depraved and rebellious, thus requiring the restraint of Law. We join Jefferson in his remedy: "Enough of this confidence in man. Bind him down from mischief with the chains of the Constitution!"
- We believe that principle must prevail over politics, expediency and pragmatism. To quote Abraham Kuyper, "When principles that run against your deepest convictions begin to win the day, then battle is your calling, and peace has become sin; you must, at the price of dearest peace, lay your convictions bare before friend and enemy, with all the fire of your faith."
- We believe character counts and morals matter and that one day we will all stand before our Maker and give account for every word we uttered, every thought we nurtured and every policy we supported. "Sow a thought, reap an action. Sow an action, reap a habit. Sow a habit, reap a character. Sow a character, reap a destiny." Individually and collectively!
